Starfield Library (별마당 도서관) is a must-go-to tourist spot/photo-zone for visitors and bookworms! Located in the center of COEX Mall, Asia’s largest underground shopping center, Starfield Library has over 50,000 titles with physical books, magazines, and iPads with e-books available. They even have a section dedicated to foreign books and famous authors. The library also hosts free meetings with authors, book talks, poetry reading, lectures, book concerts, and more!
Operated by a Shinsegae conglomerate, Starfield Library opened on May 31, 2017, with hopes to attract more visitors to the mall, whose numbers have been declining since 2014 (which it succeeded in doing). It wasn’t long before pictures of the beautiful library started taking over Instagram feeds of Seoulites everywhere. Soon, foreign tourists also started visiting, making the library a famous photo-zone.
TIPS: For some really cool pictures, get on one of the many escalators and take shots while riding up and down.
Service kiosks and an information center can help you find whatever you’re looking for. Whether you want to study, relax with a quick read, or just take a break from walking around Seoul, the library offers free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and plenty of power outlets. There are also approximately 200 seats available for visitors to take a seat. This is because all materials are for in-house browsing only and there is no rental system available yet.
When you’re feeling a little hungry, head up to the 2bd floor for coffee and cake at Billy Angel Cake Company, pick up some snacks at the E-Mart convenience store, or enjoy some fine chocolate at Teuscher. And amazingly, yes, you can take whatever you were reading with you to these locations!
There is no entrance fee for the library and they are open every single day of the week from 10AM-10PM! If you’re in the area or already exploring COEX Mall, I definitely recommend stopping by for a quick read, a short break, or for taking some cute pics!
