Eating Out One Last Time Amid NY’s COVID-19 Outbreak

After New Yorkers ignored COVID-19 precautionary warnings against eating out, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed an Executive Order on Monday, March 16, limiting all NYC bars and restaurants to offer only delivery and takeout services. Effective starting at 8 p.m. that night, my sister and I decided to eat out one last time since we didn’t know when we’d be able to eat out again. We were craving Korean BBQ, especially since we weren’t sure how or if KBBQ restaurants would offer takeout. We ended up going to Gopchang Story (곱창이야기)!

Gopchang Story specializes in a variety of gopchang (beef small intestines) dishes. We ordered the assorted platter (모듬 구이) which came with grilled beef small intestines, large intestines, entrails, and rice cakes. My absolute favorite cut of meat from the platter is 대창! (I believe it’s called large intestines in English but different dictionaries give different translations). In my opinion, it’s not as chewy as gopchang and it’s very soft with its fatty inside~ If you’re eating gopchang for the first time, I highly recommend that you order the assorted platter to get a little taste of everything and figure out which cut you like best!

After we finished most of our food, we added 2 orders of fried rice with fish roe and cheese! You can’t have KBBQ without having fried rice afterwards~ It was so good and even better because the server shaped the fried rice into a heart! I’ve eaten at Gopchang Story a few times but this was the first time the fried rice was shaped into a heart! It was so wholesome and cute! A small action that honestly made me happy during such a stressful time, when a lot of people are panicking about COVID-19.

Right now, most of America is panicking because of COVID-19. People are panic buying supplies and a lot of places are closing. I keep hearing how well Korea is handling this situation and I hope America will follow suit! Listen to every precaution: wash your hands, cover your mouth, don’t touch your face, practice social distancing, and more! Let’s get through this together! We will overcome! Fighting! 화이팅!!

Note: My sister and I took the proper precautions while walking outside and eating out (wearing masks, walking/sitting away from other people, frequently washing our hands, etc).
